The pond bottom is the collection point for uneaten feed, feces, dead algae and other organic matter. Its condition changes gradually, but the effects can appear throughout the water column and in animal behavior.
A hidden source of pressure
As organic matter decomposes it consumes oxygen and can contribute to harmful metabolites. Feeding zones and deeper areas may deteriorate first, so surface appearance alone is not enough.
Monitor trends, not one moment
Bottom odor and color, dissolved oxygen, water transparency, feed response and weather history should be reviewed together. A change across several indicators is more useful than one isolated number.
Manage before the late crop
Routine bottom care is easier than a heavy corrective response after biomass and feeding rates have risen. Product timing should reflect pond history, stocking density and the current production stage.
